And, as always, I have been baking. I am trying to come up with an original recipe to enter into the Pillsbury Bake-off. I am probably not that good because it is a pretty big competition, but it gives me a reason to do what I love to do...and I am not bound by a recipe. This is my first attempt at something. I am not sharing recipes until I perfect whatever it is that I am going to enter, but this thing is reeeediculous. The bottom part is a brownie. It is good, but I would make changes. It is a bit too much.
I will share this though, because I was amazed at how well this turned out. Stan served his mission in Argentina and now has a love for dulce de leche. I have made it before, but it was not exactly as he remembered. All it is is sweetend condensed milk. Most recipes you just take a plain 'ol can of the stuff and boil it for 3-4 hours. You have to turn it every once in a while and make sure that it is immersed in water the whole time. But, check this out. If you have a pressure cooker, just take the can and cover it with water and set the pressure cooker for half an hour and voila! Perfect dulce de leche! This stuff looks kind of gross, but it is heavenly. It is rich so I mixed it with some "stuff" to make the topping for my brownies to make it more light, but still have the wonderful flavor. Amy and Stan both gave it the thumbs up for tasting like the authentic stuff.
And here is the garden. We have sweet peas, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and lettuce. (Yes, I love healthy food too. Despite what it may look like, I don't just make junk all the time. It is just what I blog about.)
And you may have noticed the additional space that I have in my garden. Well, it is being reserved for the plants that I have sprouting in my homemade greenhouses made out of milk jugs. I have squash, zucchini, cucumber, canteloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, and more. I also have ordered some tomato and pepper plants. So, these will be taking up that additional space. Sherri in my ward is my garden information source. She is very knowledgable and very patient to answer all my gardening questions.
So, a quick story. I wrote on the milk jugs in permanent marker what was planted in them. Well, then there was a big storm and the rain washed the writing off. I have no idea what is planted in each of the jugs! This is going to make for some interesting gardening.
P.S.- I had no reason to make this dessert other than to try to come up with a new recipe. I have had about half of a piece and my mom had about a spoonful, so I still have pretty much the whole thing. Anyone is welcome to come and take some of it. You just have to critique it and give me feedback.

Awesome you're doing the bake-off too. That what I did last night--invented and had the kids try it out. So far I've entered two recipes. Wouldn't that be SO SO cool to go together. I kept thinking about you when I read about the contest--now we need to get Janene to enter it. And your baby will be old enough to leave her for the weekend--I've already thought it all through. Your dessert looks awesome! Did you see the show on Food Network with the Bake-off challenge?
By the way, I LOVE that photo of Jake sticking out of the panda. What an expressive kid!
I have a question about the milk jugs cut in half. Are those little greenhouses? Did you plant seeds, and they are your starts?
You and Wendy inspire me!
Cute pictures. Your garden looks great! The bake off sounds fun. With all the baking you've been doing lately, I bet you've learned all sorts of new tricks to help you make an amazing dessert. Can you mail me a sample. They always look so amazing. Way to be on the garden too, looks good.
Wow! You've been busy. Good luck with the bake-off. I was at the Minnesota State Fair a few years back and got to see the winners make their recipes. That would be cool if you got to do that (you know MAKE your recipe as opposed to watch the winners :c)). You're an AWESOME baker. We should have a bake-off just for fun for a Girl's Night :c).
